Flash triggers.

I used Godox recievers with my SB800s and SB900 along with a Godox transmitter with no issues. In the UK you can get re-branded Godox units and the most common are Pixapro. advantage here is that they are cheaper than godox, have a 2 tear warranty and most importantly, they have good customer support.

Worth checking where you live if there are similar rebranded Godox availalble. I've now bought 2 Godox flashguns and they are great. Not used my Nikon flashguns since. My V860mkii is better than the SB910 I was considering, has a lithium power pack that recycles in under 2 seconds on full power and lasts about 600 flashes. The AA version is cheaper, but the one I have was well unde half of the SB910 price.

There are many third party options around as have been mentioned and I'd have no issues getting any of them.

Another user of Pocket Wizards here. I can fire any of my Nikon flashes (SB- 600, 800s, 910s) and my Einstein E640s. Plus, it allows them to all work together for those times I may want to mix large strobes with the smaller flashes. I definitely recommend buying used - there are some great deals to be had. I primarily stick to the Flex tt5's and mini tt1's , with the ac3 controller.

Maybe I can help. I can not only fire off two nikon cameras but also remote flashes with one trigger

What I use are ( MAY BE NEWER VERSIONS NOW)

then that trigger, when the receivers are on the same frequency as the trigger, will fire both cameras.

USING FLASH GUNS WITH THE ABOVE

I also use PIxel King transmitter and receivers to fire the flash as well all done with the phottix trigger

so the whole setup looks like this

so now not only does one trigger fire off 2 cameras but also multi flashguns in any setup'
The advantage of using Pixel Kings to fire off the cameras but also have a through connection to allow a flashgum on top as shown on the right hand camera. pocket wizard and not many others can do this which is why I got Pixel king. they will activate up to 300 mtrs away so have a good range (I tested them and they do work at that distance)

Here is a picture of the set I have. It's all set up correctly as the flash fires when I push the test button on the Altura receiver but the flash won't fire when the shutter button is pressed on the D500.

In the photo shooting menu, on the D500, there is the flash control section and it is grayed out so I can't set any flash control settings. I have a feeling Nikon has some proprietary extras a person needs to make a remote flash work with the D500. The only other thing I can think of is the camera isn't talking to the flash through the transmitter/receiver? Really confused here.

looks as if what you have will either fire the flash or the camera as those are the only 2 positions apart from off. So you won't get flash and camera together. Phottix are by no means the cheapest I have had mine for years and an extra receiver came up on ebay which I grabbed (needed retune to my transmitter) there are some at the moment used on ebay

so those will trigger two cameras

AS for triggering the flash at the same time I went for the Pixel Kings purely because the circuit through put on the transmitter which others don't seem to have. that gives me a wide option of putting a flashgun on top of the flash trigger or firing remote flashguns as i tghe video I just posted

However the camera trigger would hang loose just attached to the camera socket which I don't like the idea of.

With the pixel king flash transmitter you have a choice of 15 channels and can group flashguns in 3 groups A B C . so if for exampl;e you had 12 flash guns you could set up for 4 guns in each group and fire them all or just fire those in say group A and group B. the combinations are limitless if you want to go thjat deep into using flashguns.

I did say that the phottix have a good rangs 300 mtrs and so do the pixel kings worth another consideration .

setting up a feed station and a hidden camera close by is far better than shooting with a long telephoto lens . I took this while sitting indoors, which I think you are aiming at

The only ones that are any good are Godox ..Why ? Because the camera transmitter box has a shoe on the top for a camera mounted flash ... No shoe no good.

Agreed - but don't forget that it is likely that re-branded Godox kit is probably available at a lower price, with better warranties and customer service. That is the case over here in the UK.

That King trigger on the right looks like a Godox unit although I switched to the XPro triggers a while back so can't remeber exactly what the old X1-T looks like.

What about in the custom settings menu? No flash settings in there?
Yes, the custom settings menu has flash settings but it is greyed out ie not available. That's why I suspect Nikon has some proprietary add-ons and only those will allow remote flashes to work with the D500.

I think you need a D500 owner to advise. My D850 has no flash functions in the shooting menu and all options are available in the custom menu with or without my Godox V860ii on the hotshoe.

Yes, I specified I needed help with my D500 and SB700 in the original post but I guess I didn't make myself clear enough.

Perfectly clear! Advice or suggestions from from anyone can be useful to a greater or lesser extent and if you restrict replies to only D500 owners you will not get the answer that a non D500 owner has that will solve the issue. Although my post has not offered a cure, you now know that on my camera the flash menu is visible with or without a flash on the hotshoe - and a third party flash at that - and maybe you have a settings issue.

All of my Nikons from a D300 to my D850 have worked with Nikon and Godox flashes on or off camera using CLS or radio triggering. So this makes me think that 1) is the D500 able to use CLS and radio triggering? 2) is the SB700 a CLS or radio device? Maybe the two are not talking to each other, although I find it odd if you can't set things in the flash menu unless you have the flash and camera paired up so the first thing I'd do is to check the manual and see if the units are compatible. but as t said, I find it odd if you can't set things in the flash menu unless you have the flash and camera paired up.

Took me 2 mins to find this Read all of the thread - lots of info there.

Well, I tried the Altura wireless flash trigger on my D7500 and it works like a charm but not on my D500! If a member has a D500 and has had success with the Altura trigger I would like to know the way you get it to work because I have tried all I know. Thanks for all the input.

There is another thread here about issues with using flash with a D500. Worth checking it out as the answer might be there.
