Does anyone use flash for wildlife photography, especially stationary birds?
I've done quite a bit of flash filled wildlife photography over the years using one or multiple flashes (e.g. hummingbirds). I do less of that now as the dynamic range of modern cameras helps quite a bit in terms of being able to pull up shadow detail but flash can still be useful in certain situations. In the case of birds it can really help to bring out color, can add some catchlight to the eyes and can help fill in dark shadow areas when the light is casting harsh shadows.

Flash has some downsides like limiting your shutter speeds to flash synch speeds, issues with flash recharge time, extra things to carry like the flash, flash brackets, a Better Beamer or similar flash extender and the like so it's not something I'll do every time I shoot. But it can really help in a lot of situations and worth having as part of your shooting tool kit.

I use flash all time when I'm shooting small birds. I'm attach a couple samples and I've written a PDF on shooting small birds. Send me a email and I'll send the PDF to you. It explains how to set flash comp, camera comp, etc.

Hi pfinfante

you may also want to take a look at this guy Flash for Bird photography

There are other photographers on YouTube that have also made tutorial videos about Flash for birds which are very good with some in depth material ,, its not something that I have tried myself "Yet" however it does appear to be worth exploring ....
