I finally risked taking expensive camera with me on my Kayak on the Waitemata Harbour, Auckland and was in for quite a treat;
Gulls hovering over disturbances in the water - turned out the be fish (Kawhai) chasing Krill - see bottom left of image.
Another gull hovering over a Kawhai disturbance but if we look carefully the Krill escapes both fish and fowl to the gull's right (lower left of image).
Other species however are attracted to the disturbances on the water's surface and are not quite so feckless.
And then these little bullets appear from nowhere, a new millimeters above the water (Fluttering Shearwaters).
Such graceful flyers.
A distinctive hunting style used to catch Krill
Before long the Shearwater are taking off to follow the shifting Krill school
Trembling at the approach of the fearsome apex predator.
