My wife, who is not as sure-footed on uneven and sometimes muddy ground as she used to be when she’s out on photo hikes with me, asked me to research hiking poles for our upcoming trip to Costs Rica. Short to medium hikes on uneven and wet trails will be a daily exercise. While we own a nice set of poles, they are too long to pack. So, the issue for this trip is transporting the poles in small suitcases as we negotiate small plane luggage size restrictions in Costa Rica. So, we need a set of folding hiking poles that have a maximum length of 16 inches (41cm) when folded up. I have found a few possibilities on Amazon and REI, but reviews are mixed RE quality and durability. Any ideas?

You can have a look to the Leki Carbon Black Series (I own them), they are exactly 16 inches long when folded. As always, if it's exactly 16 inches in your suitcase, this may be an issue, better to double check.

Thanks for the info. I stated 16 inches max length but I really have an extra inch and a half as a margin of safety or whatever.

Jen and I had a similar problem. We solved it by pulling the poles apart into separate pieces!

That doesn’t work when each section is longer than the interior dimension of the suitcase.

My wife and I have two sets of Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z hiking poles. They are carbon fiber and fold into 3 pieces. There is a flexible cord holding the pieces together.

We’ve had them for quite a long time. They are light, more flexible than telescoping poles (i.e., not as rigid and flex a bit more) and strong, in my experience. They’ve held up well and we have taken them on many hiking trips. I take mine on many of my photo trips.

We also have telescoping hiking poles. We bought the Black Diamond folding poles because they are smaller when folded than the telescoping poles and fit in our smaller luggage at the time. On photo trips I often put mine in one of the side pouches of my camera backpack to have when needed.

The Black Diamond poles come in different lengths. Barbara is 5’1” and her poles are 110 mm. The longest piece when folded is approximately 14”.

I have a longer pair. 135 or 130 mm. The longest piece is approximately 16 3/4“.

These days I usually take folding poles when travelling. The only downside is you can’t adjust the length. With telescoping poles I usually set them a bit shorter for uphill and a bit longer for downhill.

It looks like REI still sells Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z folding poles. Given how long we’ve had ours, I can’t be certain that the current models are the same as what we bought. But they may be worth a look.

Have a good trip to Costa Rica.

[Edited to remove reference to carry-on luggage (we probably checked our smaller rolling bags) and add detail to flexibility.]

I have had a pair of Black Diamond Z poles for over 10 years. They pack down to 15 inches. Quite stable and fit comfortably in luggage and back packs.
I bit the bullet at an REI and bought the same poles (maybe a slightly different Black Diamond model). I do have a one-year REI return on them if they malfunction. So, we’ll see how it goes. Thanks all for your posts and info. Jim.
