Very nice photo of an interesting Liz. Are they rare or a-plenty there, I question.

The species is endemic to Sub Saharan Africa and now mainly found in protected areas like Reserves and Game Parks.

Great catch - we saw some in Botswana and I could not get an image with its tongue out - timing was off - your was great plus it is in the water!

We actually came across a pair mating alongside the waterhole,
The Male eventually moved away and into the water, and I was fortunately well positioned to catch him with his tongue out.
For interest I have added an image of the pair mating below.
