Three of these guys came by the cottage just before sunrise last weekend, busily hunting their own wildlife for breakfast. I'm pretty sure they are Spring 2023 editions and will be migrating south soon.

Great angle Rassie - pretty little thing and a lovely shot
Thanks, Elsa. I was sitting in a Muskoka chair on the dock, looking for the loons to come by as they did every morning this summer. It was not to be though, I didn't see or hear them all weekend - I think they migrated south with the coming of winter. Fortunately three young Common Mergansers came by, and they moved like they were on a mission. I actually missed a few shots because at one stage they came so close to where I was sitting that I could not focus on them - they were inside the minimum focus distance of the 500mm PF lens. The Muskoka chair is low to the ground, and the dock surface is about 60 cm above the water. This allowed me a fairly low-level shot.

Nice shot. Love the low angle and the muted colors. I encountered these mergansers for the first time earlier in the summer on the Lake Superior North Shore. But I was on a trail up above the river and never got a good shot of them. Still, really nice to see them.

Thanks. I’ve only ever seen the adults in the past. These youngsters were newly independent and have left their parents.
