The VR on my 200-500mm stopped working recently, so I sent it in to Nikon, NY for repair. I expected that it would take a while given the CA repair facility is closed up right now and I expected that they would have a backlog go work. I was also a little worried what the repair would cost since the lens is out of warranty. Well, only 10 days from the day I shipped the lens I got it back. They replaced the VR unit, a rubber ring, and cleaned and recalibrated everything. And they didn't change me a dime! Free for what they called "minimal service."

Granted, I haven't taken it out for a test shoot yet, but it seems to be functioning fine from a couple of quick test shot around home.

THANKS NIKON!

I am glad someone had a positive experience with Nikon. I unfortunately didn't have a very good experience with Nikon Canada. My d500 was only 4 months old and when I was changing lenses I noticed that a section of the plastic frame around the mirror had melted. I sent it to Nikon expecting that it would be a warranty repair but their response was that it was impact damage. The camera had never been dropped nor banged or bumped since it was new. I even took photos of the camera before I sent it and there wasn't a mark on the camera anywhere. No amount of talking could convince them to change and I had no option but to have it repaired. I got the invoice today and the bill was for $699. I am really disappointed with Nikon but I was warned in advance of what to expect because that is the reputation of Nikon Canada. If it wasn't for the fact that I have 4 Nikon bodies and 7 lenses I probably would be dumping Nikon and moving on to something different.

From what I've heard, the other players aren't any better. While the grass may appear greener, it usually isn't.

I’m pleased Woodyg3 had a good experience with the Nikon Repair facility in Melville, NY. I, on the other hand, have had two occasions to send lenses to them for repair and had significant problems with them each time. The last time I had them return the lens unrepaired and I sent It to an unrelated repair facility in Morton Grove, Illinois, who did a great job at a reasonable price and reasonable time. I’d never use Nikon again unless it was for a warranty repair and assuming they acknowledge it is a warranty repair in advance.

This seems to work fine with Nikon also in other countries.
Some time ago I had my 500 f4 with the body slipping out of the clamp in my tripod resulting in blur images afterwards . Unfortunately this happened two days before I wanted to head out to my friend in a NP in NE Germany and I was somewhat desperate. I called the Nikon service point and although I am not NPS member they offered me to come in the same day. I went there, they told me just to wait for the diagnostics to be done and about an hour and a half later I had the body with the lens back tested and adjusted and the TC repaired. I had to pay about € 80 officially and left a fair bit if that for the kitty, but I was so glad to get unbureaucratic help:love:(y)

Does anyone have any recommendations for other repair shops? Preferably in NY but not a necessity. I got an estimate on Nikons repair site of $400 for basically a cleaning of my 80-400mm. It has quite a bit of dust in it and it is annoying me.

Might want to try APS, 8125 River Drive, Suite 100, Morton Grove IL 60053. Phone: 800-406-2046. I’ve had good luck with them. They are an authorized Nikon repair facilit.

Glad you had a good experience. My experience with CA over the years has not been particularly good. I have however, heard mostly good things about NY. I even tried to send my gear to NY from CA but Nikon forced me to CA and, well..., let's just say I wish it had gone to NY. After the AF motor in my 70-200 failed for the third time, I sent it to Midwest Camera Repair. They fixed it, did it for substantially less money than Nikon and were communicative in discussing the issues I was having with the lens. YMMV.

This is both unfortunate and weirdly reminiscent of my own experience. Three years ago I sent my then D750 back for a warrantied recall (the camera was actually and had always worked flawlessly). The camera was subsequently damaged while in their possession but initially I was challenged on that with them claiming it had been damaged by me. They sent me pictures of what was at issue and I was shocked. The polycarbonate frame around the mirror had a section that was discoloured and partially melted with a silvery colour to it. When I theorized that a technician may have inadvertently had a drop of liquid solder drop into the throat of the lens mount, they thought about it and got back to me with an offer of a new replacement body. So, ultimately they treated me well but I had to work hard for that outcome. Frankly, everyone I spoke with was helpful but it was a challenging experience. I have had one other significant repair experience where again I was ultimately well treated but had to work hard and plead my case to get such a result. I had to pay a significant fee for a repair for something that was my fault but had it partially reduced because of some mitigating factors. I know these issues can be challenging and I offer this as one observation in the hope it reads as a balanced assessment and not a rant. Though I would inevitably be a little apprehensive the next time I have to send something in for service/repair (and Nikon might say, "oh, not him again"), neither would I hesitate to do so. Customer service/warranty repair is always difficult. You don't contact them to "shoot the breeze"...it's because you have a problem.

I sent my Nikon 500mm f5.6 pf lens to Nikon for warranty repair this week (Monday, Oct 12) to fix the tripod collar locking ring knob. I will let you all know the timing and results when I get the lens back. Using NIKONUSA to request repair and get the paperwprk to send Nikon was so easy to do.

It's never been the quality of Nikon's service that I've questioned (that has always been great), but the quality and quantity of their communication about the work, timing, etc.

I had the exact issue with my 80-400--lots of dust as well as a very stiff zoom-- and had excellent service from PhotoTech in NYC. https://phototech.com/ They also did repairs for me on various other Nikon lenses and bodies over the years. Less expensive than Nikon and they are an authorized Nikon shop.

I sent in the same lens and I called before I sent. I was quoted $100. After they finally checked it out they quoted $550.00. I a told them what the quoted on phone . Ended up talking to a manager and they said they can take 10% off which was no better. I ended up selling it for a ridiculous low price. I hardly used it anymore cause I have Tamron 150 -600. Which I love.
so last week I sent Tamron in because the tripod collar went wonky and the nex day I sent in 500 PF in for auto focus . My Tamron is coming back on Monday and Nikonjust got the lens, which is not true I had tracking. I hope to get it fixed and sent before thanksgiving
