For the second time in a year or so I have accidentally decoupled my 800/6.3 from my Z9. Whenever I'm in my vehicle I rotate lens collar so the foot is facing up in case I want to lay it on a bean bag.
That means I need to rotate the lens 180 degrees when attached to my gimbal or Black Rapid sling. I have a Kirk L bracket that I have been leaving on my Z9 even though I don't use it that often.
The design of the bracket is such that when I grab the Z9 with my left hand my index finger falls directly on top of the lens release button. I don't know if I have worn out the lens release to some extent
or if this is the actual design but on my Z9 the button does not need to be completely compressed in order decouple the lens. The first incident I attached the combo to The Black Rapid and gave it a 180 degree spin with my left hand and the 800/6.3 dropped off from waist level into some grass. Hit my Zemlin lens hood first. No harm no foul. Recently I attached the combo to my gimbal and gave it a 180 degree spin with my left hand and when I let go the Z9 body dropped off from chest height onto a gravel road. I guess I'll tip my cap to the build quality as the only damage were some scuff marks. I will
note that impact apparently triggers the senor cover to close. That doesn't automatically happen if you remove the lens while the camera is still on. I'm not sure what to do as when I removed the bracket
my index finger still falls on the button. I guess I'll attempt to be more vigilant. I find it amusing they designed the memory card door such that you can't open it with one hand unless your fingers are absolutely dry and heaven forbid if you have greasy snack food(the best kind) fingers. You're lucky if you can open it with two hands.
