Cruising along the Kwando River, (Caprivi Strip, Namibia) in the late afternoon, we passed this female Hippo giving us "the eye" as she placidly munched the local veg.. Suddenly, and without any warning, a large, very jealous male charged out of the shallows in hot pursuit !

Our boatman, equally surprised, gunned the outboard and we shot forward to make our escape --- I looked back to check we were ahead of him and was highly relieved to see no sign of him, glancing down into the water I was amazed to see him running under water along the river bed beside us --- the driver got the picture and veered sharply off course and the hippo finally gave up.

His final gesture was to give us a good view down his throat, and of course, those teeth, as if to say "nearly got you this time" !! All taken with D60 and Tamron 70-300mm (no VR) handheld in the boat.

Nice images. The few hippo images I have were all taken from a safe distance. I'm not sure I would have had the presence of mind to take pictures under those conditions!
More than any other animal, hippos are responsible for most killings of humans in Africa, around 500 per year. It's a good thing you managed to stay out of his grasp.

Thanks Rassie --- The boatman said almost exactly what you have said --after our escape !!

Wondereful series and scary story, but I'd have kept shooting just like you did and then realized this was dangerous. :)(y)
Thanks Icarus, yes easy to get caught up in the action at the time -- the "shakes" come after the danger passes !
