Slower shutter speed than I expected at 1/2000

Great images- all hand held or gimbal/fluid head?

As a newbie with very little practical knowledge I have a question
According to literature since the bird was smaller than the rest of the brilliant sky the whole should have been underexposed. But it did not.
What am I missing here - a more advanced multisegment metering than Nikon or use of Layers ?
Am I being too much of a pest ?

I was using about +1.7 exposure compensation , at 0 the birds looked much too dark because of the bright sky . I also check histogram for highlight clipping
