Came across this solitary male Bison (Buffalo) wandering through the Sagebrush in Yellowstone a couple of years ago. D850 with 70-200 f4 @ 135mm., ISO 125, 1/500 Sec., handheld.

He didn't seem to be bothered by my presence, and I managed to get some good close-ups before he carried on past.

I wouldn't have dreamt of getting this close to an African Cape Buffalo, but even so I felt I had pushed my luck enough and retreated to the car to continue down the trail. A wonderful encounter with a truly majestic animal ! Please note that this last shot is a crop and that I was circa 20 metres away beside the car door with a park ranger --- even docile looking wild animals shouldn't be taken for granted !

Wonderful shots and steady nerves. I would love to have seen 10's of thousands of these running free, that had to have been an awesome sight. Alan
Thanks Alan --- yep, probably the only animal now that has those numbers are the African Wildebeest on their migration in Kenya.

Photographers, or would be photographers, have been killed by bison -- you may have been pushing your luck depending on what lens you were using. As an ex manager of recreation on public land I just hated the paperwork when a visitor was injured because they used poor judgement.

Very nice series, but seems to me you were indeed pushing your luck in that last shot. :)
Thanks Icarus, but the last shot is in fact a crop to get some head detail --- I've added some extra notes to that shot giving subject distance etc., as I don't want people to think I was being irresponsible.

I quite agree Woody and I have added an edit to the last photo ( which is a crop ) giving subject distance, my position beside the car and the fact that I was accompanied by a park ranger, to illustrate the necessity of taking sensible precautions with any wild animal !

Wow...excellent photos. You MUST take the risk to get the shot sometimes. You don't normally feel danger in wildlife photos. I get my heart pumping sometimes shooting close to alligators here in Florida. You definitely need to know your subject's behavior and tells and when to shoot and when to run!

Thanks kbrkr,--- had some elevated heart rates with charging Hippos and over inquisitive Elephants, not to mention a nosy Grizzly --- but still here to tell the tale, so I must be doing something right !

If a couple has two children they usually push the youngest one forward to get the bison or bear close up or to climb past the sign that says 'danger do not enter' .

That's good. You wouldn't want someone to try to get those shots with an iPhone. LOL
