A recent post by Woody got me to thinking about all the critters, mostly birds, we saw around our mountain home in Rappahannock County. We were amazed at the diversity of species that came to this large dogwood adjacent to the porch rail, shown here in spring time bloom. There were about 35 bird species and some 4 legged critters also. Always fun to watch nature and learn. The rare one in this collage is likely the hooded warbler and the shot was terrible. I did get the image to record the varied visitors…. I’m sure others have similar albums…

….”Home Tree” was not without drama. We hung hummingbird feeders throughout the summer that attracted swarms of the little birds. Somehow a blacksnake became aware of this and attempted an ambush near the feeder. Didn’t work as planned for the snake. The little hummers continually harassed him with “dive bomber” pecking tactics that drove the snake away…

All amazing, but the snake and bear are a sight to see!
Yes they were! You learned real quick to look both ways when you stepped outside. The bears could be on the deck or in the dogwood (home tree) or anywhere. They normally run away but sometimes they don’t. We took our bird feeders in at night because of the bears and raccoons. But some would come to the tree during the day.
