(UPDATED Photos in Post number 6 )

AKA Regal Moth Caterpillar. There are several species of these. The caterpillars can grow quite large. This one was young and only about 2.5 inches (6.3cm). They can get double this size.
They look fierce but the horns are not hardened and they do not cary venom. Just look like they would hurt you.

Updated Photos a couple weeks later. It has gotten huge. Soon it will drop off the tree, burrow underground and pupate over winter emerging as a Regal Moth next spring.
Here is the final stage of the caterpillar before pupating.
