Arms of a titan. Nice image. So how far...? :)
More like Reed Richards from the fantastic four.. (the guy with rubber arms..) LOL. I would say about 30-35 yards... shot at F/5 2000s shutter with an iso of 3200. I took 8 shots all in Focus but they all get lower and lower... :ROFLMAO: . (So no skill on my part, I credit the fantastic lens and VR).

Nice capture, Gordon! These guys can stand quite tall when something gets their attention. We used to have on come in our back yard to get chestnuts when they fell off the tree. I would sneak out the back door or around the house and when he heard something he would stand up tall, then be off like a flash. You have me wanting to search my storage drive to see if I had any decent shots of him.

What do you reckon between the 400, 500 and 600?
I'm a big fan of the 400, I had one when my kids were in High school and doing sports. When I got divorced I had to sell it. I'll probably own another one someday but here's how I see it. The 400 is great for sports, if you are have a DX camera it will work for wildlife , It takes the 1.4 tele really well... But you are almost always chasing distance. the 500 was serious consideration as it about 2000 cheaper than the 600. (Used). I ended up creating the table below as a visual.. My thought process was (what do I want to photograph, how close can I expect to get to said creature... and could I afford it. While everyone is different here are the things I took into consideration.

Where I live there are limited oppertunities (other than cow's , deer, horses, And Maybe a black bear for anything of size.) we do have some nice birding at certain times of the year. but the NWF (I have 2 within an hours drive) make you keep a pretty good distance from MOST birds... Getting an eagle shot here is just dumb luck because once they nest we can't get within 1/2 mile of the nest. (and for the record the trails are still closed) I try to get to Florida at least once a year.. there you can pretty much use whatever you have and get fantastic shots... (again mostly Birds, the occasional Alligator, and if you're REALLY lucky a panther.

Next is my Favorite place Yellowstone / Tetons area... Now we can shoot larger animals but if you have ever been, they keep you back a good distance.. If your off the beaten path (there are some little side roads or on a hike you might be able to get closer... but most of those big animals you don't really want to be that close to. So again the reach comes in handy. With regards to reach you can only go so far... Heat distortion is very real and really sucks... LOL.My 600 is really great at finding an eagle 3/4 to a mile away but your not getting a photo of it that worth a darn.

Having had the 400 (Non VR) and now the 600 (VR) I can tell you I LOVED my 400... But I LOVE my 600 more.. this lens is just Phenomenal.. the back grounds are better than my 400 , it focus MUCH faster. Now if we could just get it 8 lbs lighter. it does get old towards the end of the day carrying it but it not an issue YET. but someday it probably will be.

As a last note...
I searched Ebay and all the places Nikon glass is sold... I can across some good deal and some great deals... I'm pretty picky about my gear I take real good care of it... so I wasn't going to buy a lens that was beat up looking. (although in the end if you put a lens coat on it... you would even see it.) and you can save even more money. The point is if you are willing to search there are deals and you can get a REALLY nice piece of glass (I ended up getting my 600 for a little more then I had on the price of the 500 listed below... IMHO an excellent deal.

I came across quite a few of these guys and you are right they don't tolerate people much... I was really surprised that he hung around as long as he did. There was a couple walking behind me and once they took 2 steps past me he was gone.
