I was excited to discover this event in my front yard and took many pictures. I had to shoot through 2 layers of glass, but I think these came out OK. I am now having trouble looking at them again- it was a prolonged death for the Blue Jay, and I found myself rooting for the Jay...which fought valiantly...and lost. Still, it is a part of what goes on in nature and not often witnessed. This first picture is especially poignant, I feel. The hawk had the Blue Jay pinned down on it's back. They both tried to peck at a vulnerable place, but the Jay could not change positions. I wish it had been quicker-there were many pauses and sudden repeat attacks from both birds.
