A very obvious and startling butterfly when basking in the sunlight --- however, it would normally roost at night (or when in winter hibernation) with its wings folded over its back showing only a dark brown/ black underside, mimicking a dead leaf. If disturbed it will open its wings suddenly to expose the eye spots which usually scare off winged enemies, but it also makes a hissing sound which is more effective against predatory rodents. Taken with D500 and Nikkor 105mm Micro @ f7.1 ISO 200, 1/500 Sec., handheld.
