Trumpeter Swans are large birds, with males weighing up to 28 pounds and having a wingspan of up to 10 feet. Females are a bit smaller. These birds are found in North America, and their population is divided into three groups, Pacific, Rocky Mountain, and interior, based on their breeding range. All three groups migrate south to overwinter. This image shows a swan caught flapping and stretching its wings while standing on an ice shelf in a partially frozen river during a snow storm.
