I was out birding in a place called Bijoliya in south-eastern Rajasthan. While trying to get near an adult Imperial Eagle, my friend and I sighted a pack of 4 wolves. They were on the verge of polishing off a Nilgai fawn kill.
The Indian Wolf, with its sparse coat, is among the most endangered subspecies of wolf. A beautiful animal, its stare is right out of Kipling's Seonee pack.

The population is pegged at less than 2000 individuals in various geographically segregated pockets. With a higher focus on larger carnivores, meso-predators are often overlooked in conservation efforts.
