Is a Nikon 500mm f4e still worth buying

Hi all, I mainly shoot birds as a wildlife shooter and to give me the reach I have a 800mm 6.3z lens. I have an opportunity to acquire a 500mm f4e lens, which was the last of the 500mm f4 for DSLRs. It’s a fair price $3000 and mint condition. What do you think, a good addition to what I already have or not?

My long lens is the 600mm f/4 E FL and I love it on the Z8 and Z9. Sure if I discover a pile of money I’ll likely switch to the Z series 600mm TC but I’m very happy with the F mount version.

If a 500mm F/4 lens will help your photography and like me you have budget constraints, I’d recommend this lens. It’s razor sharp, is great in low light, renders fantastic backgrounds wide open and works very well on both DSLRs and mirrorless bodies.

I had the Sigma OS, which is essentially the "same" lens, and it is certainly inspiring to use, but...after I had a 500PF for a while I found that I liked the results as much, the PF issues I occasionally had with the 300 weren't issues with the 500, and is was much easier to use, so...I sold the f4. I think if I add back it'll be a 600VR just because they are a relatively good value at this point. Caveat...I'm still in DSLR world, so...there's that.

For sure if you want that f/4 goodness. Obviously no point buying if you intend to use it at 700 f/5.6 as you already have 800 f/6.3. But to use it as an f/4 if you have subjects that 500mm is appropriate then nothing beats that light gathering you get from f/4.
