Is the iPhone the Best Choice for Mobile Photography in 2024?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I've been considering upgrading my phone, and as someone who loves taking photos, I'm curious if the iPhone still holds the top spot for mobile photography. With so many new models and competitors like Samsung and Google offering incredible cameras, is the iPhone worth it for a casual photographer?

One thing I’ve noticed is how apps like Scarlet on the iOS App Store can really elevate the photo-editing experience. Whether it’s fine-tuning a shot or adding creative filters, apps like these can make even casual photographers feel like pros. It’s part of what makes the iPhone ecosystem so appealing to me. By the way, you can install Scarlet applications store from here.

What features do you find most useful for photography on your iPhone? Do you think it beats the competition, or are other brands pulling ahead? I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially if you’ve recently switched from another brand or upgraded to one of the latest iPhones.

Looking forward to your insights! 😊

I think all of the top tier smartphones are roughly equivalent in quality. I’ve read several reviews this year and like mirrorless systems they each have some strengths the others don’t but often it looks like splitting hairs to declare one a winner.

I think the camera system is less important than all the software and services surrounding it. Plus the ergonomics and design approach. For me, I appreciate what the Apple ecosystem offers. I know others feel quite constrained by it and would never choose one. I also know people who bounce between platforms or even own one from each platform because they are the FOMO crowd.

I’m still on a 14 Pro and it took me a while to realize that I just done care that much about pics from my phone. It’s handy in a pinch but I’ve tried several outings using only my phone and I always end up disappointed with the experience. I’d rather have my regular camera.

Good luck making a decision that fits your needs and approach. You can’t go wrong with any option as long as you have realistic expectations.

If you're contemplating video, the iPhone is it.

Any of the flagships they're all about the same. IMO the imagery has been kind of stagnant after they introduced the night modes and refined them slightly. I see splitting hairs difference between the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the 14 Pro Max I use now. Prior to that I had an 8 and the jump from 8 to 12 was a huge leap in quality at night. I see almost no difference at all between the 14 and 16. It seems like things have maxed out for what computational techniques can do on these phones.

I agree with TurtleCat, I've tried just using the iPhone but I find the colors especially sort of diet versions of what I can get on my ILC cameras and just am never really happy with the results. They're fine for documenting stuff as I always have it on me but I really prefer a larger sensor camera.

Video is great on the iPhones.
