How long does the season last there ?
It varies but the old best guess used to be Thanksgiving +/- 3 weeks for the peak but depending on weather it could be longer or shorter. This season started slow and late so everyone is hoping it will last longer as the migratory Eagles were later getting here. It can really start in early Oct. The last 3-4 years have been lean but this one is promising.

Interesting that the birds just pass through. Is the timing coincident with a fish run?

The Spring run is tied to the shad run. That one is sometime late Mar through mid-late Apr. A cold snap can shut that one down over night and has the last two years. The Fall is just the availability of the number of fish at the dam and the ones that wash through the turbines when generating power. The is always an abundance of shad and catfish along with lessor numbers of other species that congregate in the river and at the dam. Also with the current, the water never freezes so always open water in the vicinity of the dam..

ETA: I believe the Spring shad run Eagles are mostly Chesapeake Bay resident Eagles that follow them up the Bay to the dam.
