Having spotted a large male Leopard on an early morning drive in Kafue NP in Western Zambia , our driver took a detour into the long grass, hoping to intercept it for a better view. Much to our delight the Leopard appeared and then came alongside the jeep to sniff some essence on the grass, beside the front wheel !

Not content with a faint aroma he then lay down to get a better "nose full" ! Mind you, he still kept a wary eye on the jeep .

Eventually he got up and wandered off, possibly following a scent trail to a fruitful liaison ? Amazing sheen off his beautiful pelt . All taken with D500 and Tamron 150-600mm. @ 150mm., f5, 1/500 Sec., ISO 250. Handheld. 03/09/17.

I had gone to Zambia mostly to see Leopards, but I never imagined getting one as close as this --- a wonderful memory of a great encounter !
David, beaut images. You can see them that close in Kruger too, but not as often as on these mega drives you were on.
In SA, SabiSands - there are several operaters in the area, will also nearly always guarantee your leopards. That is maybe the best place in Africa so see leopards.

When we went on to South Luangwe for a further 3 days we had another 16 Leopard sightings, most of which were in daylight --- I was a very happy bunny then !
