Laptop recommendation for trip?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I'm going to Bosque del Apache on Sat., Dec. 3. I need to buy a laptop to download my daily photos. I have Apple equipment. What lightweight Apple laptop would you suggest, and specifics on needed memory, etc. I am no techie. Thanks!

What is your budget and what do you plan to do with the images on the laptop? If just culling, then most laptops would work. If you will be editing/post-processing, then that is a different story. With more details, better recommendations are easier to provide.

The purpose for the photo trips that I take are primarily for downloading and culling my. images, but if I have a touch screen, I might like to do some editing. Maybe give me specs for both? Thanks so much! Budget under $5000 Canadian, about $3500 USD at most.

I would want the model with the fastest ports to be able to move the data from the card reader to the laptop and to a backup SSD.

With the Mac Pro there is one that still uses the M1 chip and two models hat use the newer M2 chip. Apple periodically will introduce an upgrade for the operating system for devices and it will only work on the newer models, making the M2 chip version the safer choice. I would be going with the Macbook Air with its base price of $1199. Keypad layouts are different so be sure to see which one is most like what you are now using.

You can download the images and cull them on an iPad. You can also edit them very quickly. You can then airdrop them to your Mac at home. Just make sure that before you airdrop them you hit the option button to include all photo data including edits.

Most Apple laptops are fully capable of culling, albeit the speed will also depend on the program you are using. If you are editing, with something like Lightroom Classic, then you will want a reasonable amount of RAM and a decent processor. The game changed when Apple released the M1 and M2 processors, as they are more efficient designs and RAM requirements are not quite the same as they used to be. I am not as familiar with Apple laptops as I am with Windows models, but along with settling on RAM and CPU, I would give consideration to the color quality of their screen options as laptops can sometimes be a bit more limiting than an IPS panel monitor. And, I would give some consideration to the keyboard and battery life as well since. The main thing to remember about laptops these days is that almost everything is now soldered on the board and is not easily upgradable if it is upgradable at all. So, if you can, try out what you want to buy and ask questions of somebody who knows what they are talking about. I suspect it will be hard to completely miss the mark with Apple's new laptops as they do not really sell loss leader models. And if you do narrow down your choices, I bet you will get good feedback from folks here. I cannot comment any more on them as I have not kept up on the changes since they designed their own CPU's.

Good luck,

Apple MacBook Air.

The M2 Apple Macrook Air will do everything you need. I have one with 24GB RAM and 1TB HD but 16GB RAM would be fine for your description. While you could get by with 8GB or RAM for me 16 is the min when you can’t upgrade. HD is personal preference, 1TB is enough for most of my trips but I always bring external SSD drives with me as well.

What else will you do with the laptop and what is your budget. I got an M1 Macbook Pro from both my wife and myself. Mine is a travel machine, hers is an every day laptop.

Also we each have a set of Samsung T7 2TB SSD drives to back up our images. On the way home, keeping your images safe is very important. I keep the backup disks in different locations (camera bag, computer bag, or even in my pocket)

This. Is the method I decided on. Thanks!

Lots of input! Thank you! I am looking at a refurbished (on Apple website in Canada) iPad Pro, 4th generation, with 1 TB storage and an A12Z bionic chip. It is 12.9" and is in the $1200 range, vs. over $2000 for a similar with M1 chip. I know nothing about this chip vs. the M1. Is this a good buy? I like the light weight vs. the laptop and less bulk. I could get an 11" refurbished for a little over $1000. Undecided - advice?

An iPad is a very different device than a laptop. You can probably find a workflow that works with an iPad, but it may require some work to get things to happen as you wish. Some here, and at other forums, have done it, but IMHO, it is not intuitive or simple. Having said that, I do love the iPad for what it does best. I am just not sure I would choose one over a lightweight laptop if I wanted to do a lot of culling and editing on the road unless size/weight were absolutely paramount in my decision criteria. But I would get opinions from those that do use it for culling and editing before making any decisions. I suspect that a forum search on the work "iPad" might turn up some interesting threads.

You want the M1 or M2 chip. I considered switching from Windows because of the processing power of those Apple processors.

You can get a new MacBook Air M1 chip starting at $1000. Check out Apple website. M2 start at $1200. Obviously , that’s the base configuration but if it’s a laptop you really want, I wouldn’t settle for anything other than a M1 chip. Get as much memory as you can afford and at least 512 gigs of storage. You can offload and back up your photos using an external drive. The Samsung T7 drives is the way to go. If your are leaving on Dec. 3 , buying directly from Apple may not be an option since you may not get it delivered on time.

Wow, so many valuable pointers! I also looked at the iPad forum, per Ken's and others' input, and ultimately have decided to purchase a new iPad Pro, 11" with 1 TB storage,M2 chip. I have used my 5th gen. iPad mini to back up photos while travelling and enjoy editing them at the kitchen table with finger on screen, a few everyday, and can go back on my desktop to edit also if I wish. It's out of memory to use for travelling now, but I love it still. Works well as it's my hobby :). Thanks to all for steering me in the right direction for chip, memory needs, etc. Such a great resource and support group you all are!

I have an iPad Pro- M1 and it works great. I just purchased a Samsung SSD to off load photos from the iPad . That way you can keep the iPad from filling up and also have a portable backup.

Thanks! Great to hear it's working great! I previously bought a WD My Passport for Mac and have an adapter for the iPad to boost power for back-up once photos are downloaded on the iPad, but never used it. What do you think about this?

@Ralph , thank you. I took advantage of some decent discounts & ordered the iPad Air (2022) for $679 and the Samsung T7 1TB drive for $89 from B&H. My old iPad is over 10 years old, and I needed a high capacity portable SSD drive as well.
