As a long time Nikon user, I started my mirrorless journey with Fuji and I'm not the only one who has dSLR and a CSC from different makers.

I've got an adaptor for using Nikon lenses on the Fuji. Manual focus is not an issue, but can be limiting in certain situations. I favour the older Nikon D lenses with aperture rings to get semi auto exposure control and easier manual exposure. The Nikon G lenses (and more recent lenses) with no physical aperture ring on the lens only have limited and crude aperture control with my adaptor and many adaptors don't have any aperture control.

I very recently found a new adaptor that enables autofocus with Nikon lenses (that have focus motors in the lens) on my Fuji cameras. It also offers aperture control with Nikon G lenses and above with the rear command dial, just as my Nikons do.

They also make adaptors for other lens and camera combinations and I suspect that they will be increasing their range too. So far they have Nikon F>Fuji X, Canon EF/EFS>Fuji X, Canon EF/EFS >Nikon Z, Contax 645>Fuji GFZ and Contax N/645>Sony E.

I can only speak on the Fuji and they say that on the earlier XT camera models the AF might not work as well as later models, and the more sensitive AF points will work better than the peripheral ones. I've yet to test this but so far with my XT-4 the central focus points are fine. They have detailed compatibility charts and information available. Due to the way that Fuji switches between exposure modes (uses a switch on the lens and a switch on the body in various combinations, not selected with one switch/button on the camera), I have aperture priority and manual exposure modes. EDIT: I'm a numpty. All modes are available A,S.P and M. Not being used to using the rear command dial for aperture control on the Fuji, I was turning it the wrong way!

In the Nikon compatibility chart they include some lenses + 1.4x and 2 x teleconverters and are updating the firmware regularly. Here is a video showing focus tracking using a Fuji S-X10 with a Nikon 500mm f4:

The price is eye-watering as it is not just a chunk of metal. However I have bought one and now have nine more lenses that I can use with my Fujis. Cheaper than buying 9 Fuji lenses :)

I got mine from Amazon as there is an easy returns system, but it looks like a keeper.

Hi Graham,
As a Fuji-XT3 XF100-400 user I would be really interested in hearing more of your impressions of using the longer Nikon lenses with your Fuji as no other options exist in the Fuji range at present. I've been very happy with the Fuji but would welcome some additional choices. I have considered a D500 + 500PF but having come straight to mirrorless from an old Canon with kit lenses can't really imagine going back to a DSLR. I walk and exclusively hand hold so the 500PF is of particular interest to me - have you tried this lens with your XT4?
Best regards Andy

Hi Andy
I've only just got this adaptor so have only used it to check that my lenses are working OK. Not been out of the house and shooting through the glass in the windows to test the longer lenses! My Nikkor AF-S 80-200 f2.8 D, AF-S 300mm f4 D and Sigma 150-600 Sport work OK on my initial tests. I've not done enough to comment on the speed of the AF and how fast it locks on etc, but I'll be trying that along with 1.4x and 1.7x TCs in due course.

The compatibility chart says that these TCs will work with the 80-200 and the 1.4x with the 300 f4. Sigma and Tamron 150-600 are also on the list at the bottom of the page showing their Nikon F> Fuji X mount adaptor.

Not got the 500PF but In this list they have:
AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR *
AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR + 1.4X *
AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR + 1.7X *
AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR + 2X *
* = newly added (presumably by the latest firmware 1.20)

So that looks encouraging.

How do you find the Fuji 100-400? I was considering it, but might find the forthcoming XF 70-300 a better bet for my use especially if the Sigma 150-600 does a job and I could ditch my XF 55-200.

To add a bit more to this, today I tried testing the performance of the AF points at the edges and corners of the frame. I chose my old Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 Kit lens and stopped down to f5.6 so as not to gain anything from a fast lens at f2.8.

My Fuji XT-4 is set to use 117 focus points (out of 425).

I'm very happy to say that the AF works just fine on images I took with focus points in a corner, in the middle edges of the frame and I ended up with one using the central AF point on something 1 metre from the camera at 70mm hand held at 1/4 sec which turned out very well. The lens has no stabilisation so the IBIS was also doing its stuff!

This adapter will be interesting to watch as experience gathers

That’s a difficult question for me to answer as I don’t have any reference points as I haven’t shot with any comparable lenses. It is a vast improvement over my old canon 75-300 as would be expected.

My primary interest now is photographing birds and coming from a base of zero knowledge it has been an interesting process of trial and error, adjusting equipment and technique. This site has been a great resource as I have found that my frustrations are shared by many here and not confined to camera brand. I have learnt a lot from other’s posts and a high percentage of the Nikon suggestions can be applied to my Fuji setup. I came to Fuji on the recommendation of a friend who is an exceptional photographer who had moved to Fuji after a long time with Canon. He has compared the Fuji xf100-400 XT4 side by side with his Canon EF 100-400 and couldn’t split them. Shots of distant moving birds at 400mm using zone focus in AFC mode in terms of focus sharpness have been a bit hit and miss but I am not sure how realistic my expectations are. Success rate has definitely improved from tips gleaned here and watching Steve’s videos. The XF 100-400 on the XT3 is a very comfortable weight for me to walk with and handhold. I much prefer the ergonomics with the battery grip.

I would really like to hear opinions from anyone here using Fuji.

You might find this interesting then. He uses Fuji and gives detailed settings and advice:

This is an allied web page that has screenshots of the various settings etc:

My test of the edge focus points was a waste of time. All focus points are phase detect points! This re-enforces the ability of the adaptor on the Fuji.

I've now tested my 300mm f4 + 1.7x TC, so effectively a 510mm f6.3. Conditions were bright overcast and only in my small back garden. It was FREEZING! Birds had more sense than to come out but I found the AF good on static subjects and only hesitated a bit on a low contrast subject that it did lock on to reasonably quickly.

I should add that in all of the testing I've done, I've used standard performance so I'd expect better results with boost performance.

Also stumbled on this:

He re-enforces the other guys use of 7x7 zone tracking, but he also suggests some things that differ, and I'm not sure about, like where he talks about the tracking modes and rolling shutter and pre AF.

Thanks for the links Graham. I had previously viewed the first one and his recommendations are pretty much what I have read elsewhare and have adopted. I look forward to your weather improving and hearing your impressions.
