We all strive for detail but less detail can leave more focus on the bird in its habitat, when saying something about the character of the bird is the purpose. Eg. raptors are vigilant and active, so why not try to capture that.
The Swamp Harrier hunts by sound as well as sight so it can be active in twilight. Hence its owl-like face.

Nice shots. I agree with you. The longer I have been shooting wildlife shots the less attracted I am to the portraits than to the environmental shots. I think the broader view does often tell more of a story
