When shutting LrC down and choosing to back up the catalog this evening I received the following message for the first time (I hope I managed to attach the screen shot). I checked the size of the catalog file and it has indeed exceeded 4GB - it's 4.34GB. I'm surprised this message didn't appear the last several times I shutdown and backed up.
I'm looking to see how others are dealing with this.
