It has been my experience that many smaller birds like to harass the larger birds. In the first shot a Red-winged Blackbird is harassing a Great Blue Heron/ in the second shot, the Blackbird turns and bites the Heron. Crows harass Eagles and guess what, Mockingbirds harass Crows and Blackbirds harass everybody. These smaller birds are not protecting territory, they do it as a sport!

Wow!
Neat captures of interesting behavior. My guess is there was a nest in the reeds nearby.
No, no. I have a small portfolio of these birds harassing larger birds - everywhere. They are not defending anything!

Cool set... I get the funnest chuckle when one of those little birds goes after an eagle... it like ahhhhh not a good decision man.
I've got a series of crow harassing an eagle. The flight of the birds is like the flight of a bomber and that of a fighter plane; I even have a shot of a Blue Heron taking off after a crow that had been harassing him. The crow took off just a little bit faster.

Around here the RWBBs usually annoy the Eagles and Osprey enough they will leave but every time I see them gang up on Ravens I see the Raven leave with a blackbird in his mouth.

Always hits the right spot when one can see these interactions, and get a nice frame or too. Tried it often and not easy to do!

That's what happens when both birds can fly like fighter planes; It's the big, relatively slow moving bombers that have problems. Here's a shot of a heron who's had enough!! The Heron is not going to catch the Blackbird.
