Tide was out which they seem to like for better access to the good stuff, so lying as flat as possible let me wait for these to gradually wander closer and closer which was so nice to see them close in otherwise very dim sunset light.

Still, my current obsession with backlight worked for the water while the strong diffusion made the feathers nicely evened out with no hot white zones.

I swear they had their beaks in the water 85% of the time and rarely did anything interesting while above water so I was happy to catch a droplet or whatever it had in its beak.

Nice shots. They are like sewing machine needles, up and down over and over. I was photographing them this morning, as well, and it takes a lot of shots to get one just right, as you said. Great job on these!

Nice set of images!
Thank you. I was at first kind of in a bad mood as I had anticipated a full sun sunset but found full cloud cover.

Then I put on my “what can I do with this?” hat and took time to gory close enough to these and to let them just wander in a relaxed way.

I need to find better access to satellite data so I don’t spend a 2-3 hour drive expecting different conditions next time.
