Elijah Parish Lovejoy was an American Presbyterian minister, journalist, newspaper editor, and abolitionist. After his murder by a mob for his abolitionist views, he became a martyr to the abolitionist cause opposing slavery in the United States. He was also hailed as a defender of free speech and freedom of the press. I've never been able to replicate this phenomena with a digital camera, but several times (more than a few) when I took pictures of this Monument, which resides in Alton, with film, I'd capture this ghostly, unexplained "apparition" on my pictures. I took to calling them Lovejoy's Ghost I, II, and so on. I never saw it in the viewfinder! This picture, shot at night after a light snow, is replicated here for your viewing pleasure.
