Mac Big Sur V11.2 Nikon Z7-2

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Anyone help please.

I have an iMac and a 2020 Air, this applies to both.

Big Sur 11.2 does not support Nikon Z6/7-2 on my Macs. On other peoples Macs the cameras are shown as supported. This means that NEF will not open in Preview or Apple Photos, not a big deal, I use LR but occasionally like to quick check an NEF in Preview and in any case want to get to the bottom of the issue.

So go to 'About This Mac - System Report - RAW Support' In the list of cameras which appears in my case only the Z6/7-1 is listed. Other people have shown that Z6/Z7-2 also appears.
On the web there are also people with the same result as myself.

Regardless of which camera we use why on earth would a main system file be different on different Macs running the exact same version OS?

I would be grateful if anyone will check their Macs and let me know what they see for Nikon Zs, (does not matter what camera you use yourself)

(I can open Z7-1 NEF in Big Sur 11.2 preview but not Z7-2 NEF.)

Thank you.

According to Apples support page it should be supported as of February 2, 2021.

If you just installed Big Sur v. 11.2 try reinstalling. Sometimes that helps. I know it’s not any help right now but I always wait before installing a new version of an operating system. I usually wait at least until another version comes out . So in this case I would wait for
v. 11.3 to come out before I would install v.11.2 . This way you have time to do web searches to see if there are any issues. And even then I would install it only on an external drive first and try it with all my applications. If everything is good then I would install on my internal drive.

Thanks Ralph yes that's right but my RAW Support screen does not reflect that. Sent a screen shot to an American. with Z7-2 missing, he sent one from his Mac screen with it present! LOL think I have the English version of Big Sur.

FWIW, my Mac is running Catalina 10.15.7 and the system report shows the following:

I always download everything cameras phones etc never been bitten and Big Sur is fine, I just noticed this little oddity. Doesn't stop me editing with anything and I don't use Apple photos, maybe as you say 11.3 will clear it up. One person with same issue as myself said it just suddenly added the cameras.

One thing you could check is the Finder 'file open' setting for NEF files. To do so you right click on a NEF file and select 'Get Info'. Look for the 'Open with:' setting and open it if necessary (see below). If Preview isn't set in the dropdown you can change it there. If you do I'd also select 'Change All' and confirm. It's a long shot but I think worth a try.

The only information I could find related to this is a post on an Apple user forum where a user also said "all of sudden it started working". If that's the case and it isn't due to the user manually doing some type of official software update (e.g. point release, supplemental update) then it implies that Apple is updating software on its own in the background. That would be a surprise to me.

Apple does install RAW support in background based on your settings.

These system data files are installed in the background which includes RAW file updates based on how you have your setting configured:

  • Improved updating of iCloud Keychain credentials and passwords across your Apple devices
  • Support for new top-level domains in Safari

  • Updated information to help automatically identify and block incompatible apps from opening or being migrated to a new Mac

Long list there, I did not change anything as far as I know, was on Big Sur and simply updated to 11.2 wouldn’t my use have carried over? Having said that you are probably on it but where to start I havn’t a clue. I removed Adobe from my Air recently but that and my LR package are still on imac and I have no known issues with anything on either macs. Unless a file or cache whatever was removed somehow.
NXD and LR/PS use my Z7-2 Raw OK. As do Darktable and Raw Therapee.
Thanks for that.

Thanks Ralph. I've bookmarked that page. So that probably explains the "it just started working" phenomenon. Now, the obvious question is, what triggers the raw updates?
Good Question. I would go to the update software settings in the system preference and check the three boxes outlined on the support page above. They are under the advanced setting. I would wait a few days to see whether the update occurs . If not maybe you may need to reinstall. Just a guess. Updates usually occur at night. If the update does occur you may need to restart before it takes affect.

You can check in system report if the installation has occurred. Click on “about this Mac” under the apple menu then click on SystemReport. Scroll down to software and look for RAW support. Click on that and you will get a list of supported cameras.

Thanks for all the help. Here is the eventual answer unlikely as it seemed. I was pointed at this by a chap on "Apple Community Forums."

He said the procedure may take hours but it worked in minutes on both of mine.

I opened the RAW Support LIst and Photos App at the same time & within a few minutes the List populated with the Z-2 cameras.
I was then able to open NEFs in Preview. (it is necessary to have an NEF on the computer, I did not know that but as a LR user there were NEFs on my machine anyway.)

Makes me think I should have found that but there you go and as I don't use Photos it never entered my head as I was have always been able to open previews anyway with Z7-1

Thanks Dave for the update. Very interesting. There is always someone out there with the answer. Just like this forum.😀
