Is that the same Scaup in both photos? The duck with the female Ring-necked looks like a good candidate for Greater Scaup with its more forward head peak.

Thanks, it's a Lesser. But you've documented a good example of how the Lesser Scaup head shape can vary. For that reason I usually try to get a rear or front shot of the head to show the head and bill width.It is the same. These were the only two ducks ( other than some mallards) on the pond that day
