mauve stinger in the depths

this was such a super cool (/terrifying) experience in which did my second ever blackwater dive -- blackwater being that you are in the open ocean, far from shore, at night, tethered to the boat -- and saw maybe too many jellies. this "species," pelagia noctiluca,, has actually been seen as more of a species complex in recent times so i'm not sure if it even is a mauve stinger or another, more stingingy, undescribed species! i'm really glad i saw this before it saw me because these boys can get you with those super long tentacles as seen in the uncropped image
