We just returned from our first trip of the season on Prince William Sound. At two of our anchorages there were a few whimbrel hanging around. I've rarely seen them out there and this was certainly the first opportunity to get anything more than documentary photos. Here's a sample.
In my kayak and 800mm PF I was able to get within range to pretty well fill the frame in DX mode. There were a half a dozen of them feeding.
1) Coming down to the water.
2) Taking a drink of salt water.
As I sat still in the kayak it drifted closer to shore. The birds were comfortable enough to keep feeding. Finally in FX mode I couldn't fit them in frame.
3) A nice close range portrait.
4) This one caught some sort of tiny crab like creature.
We moved to another location and more whimbrels came within reasonable range of our anchorage. 800mm, DX mode, and cropped to about 15MP.
5) Up on a pedestal.
6) IFR flying.
