I'd love to get a Nikon d810a someday or equivalent to learn with....isn't that the astro modified Nikon?

It sounds like you have access to great dark sky. We go on long desert trips in the American southwest in the Spring for wildflowers but the sky is compelling as well. We ran into the Las Vegas astronomical society by chance and watched them doing their stuff. Folks came from Germany to join them and were in awe of how dark it was.
