Missing NEF files .. Nikon Z6ii

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I'm reviewing several photos I took last month and discovered that the camera only recorded JPEG files rather than NEF and JPEG. I had set the camera to record both since I wanted to quickly send the JPEG files over the Internet to friends (I didn't have my Mac with me). The situation is weird, and I cannot recall ever shooting at 14fps, which would max the buffer. At most, I'd double-tap the release to minimize the risk of closed eyes, etc., and then move on. The issue seems random because it would capture RAW and JPEG images, then inexplicably revert to DSC JPEG on;y images recorded on the Sony Tough CFexpress card. I can't recall changing the file format in the menu, so I have ruled out operator error.

I wonder if this could be buffer overload, whereby shooting quickly to capture a shot can overwhelm the camera’s buffer, especially when writing both NEF (RAW) and JPEG files. While the camera may prioritize the smaller JPEGs to keep up, the NEF files could get skipped if the buffer maxed out—explaining why no error message appeared. But I was not in rapid-fire mode approaching what I'd think would max the buffer.

Or could it be a card write speed issue? Even though the Sony Tough CFexpress card is fast, writing both file formats at high speed could cause a bottleneck. If the card couldn’t keep up, it might have defaulted to recording JPEGs only.

I'm trying to do a bit of a witch hunt to rule out any issues, and I would appreciate any feedback. Trying to edit in Post on JPEG was not the intent.

Thank you, all.

You swapped u modes, went to a mode that only shoots jpg, etc. The camera won't ever randomly change to just shooting jpg without settings changes.

Could also be bracketing, etc. But that card I don't think has the highest sustained write either, not that it would stop you from shooting.

Thanks, Cameron. This explains a lot. U1 was NEF + JPEG, and U2 was JPEG only. I'm not sure how I did this, but after a long flight and jet lag, who knows what might have happened.
