I have Z9 firmware version 5.0 but control function a16 that lets one manually overide autofocus is missing. My friend’s Z9 with the same firmware has the function. I figured out a workaround so that my 180-600 function the same as it does on my Z8 but it makes me wornder why our two Z9s are different. Any ideas? I’ll reload C 5.0 when I get back home on Thursday to see if that works.

Option a15 (Z8) / a16 (Z9) is available only when the lens attached to the camera has a focus ring.

If you’re using a lens which does not have a focus ring (like the 180-600), it will have a control ring which includes the ability to focus manually when “Lens Control Ring” in f2 is set to M/A. a15 (Z8) / a16 (Z9) will not be in the menu in this case.

If you’re using a lens which has a separate focus ring, a15 (Z8) / a16 (Z9) will be in the menu and in f2, “Lens Control Ring” will not have the option M/A.

Hope this is helpful.

It's not the camera, it's the lens. a16 won't show up unless you have a comparable lens attached - one with a dedicated focus ring. The 180-600 has a control ring that doubles as a focus ring, so a16 won't show up with that lens attached.

Thanks guys,
I’m surprised that a16 isn’t just greyed out instead of disappearing. I checked and a16 did appear as predicted when I attached the 70-200. I discovered the appropriate settings by trial and error while the birds waited for me. 😎

Yeah, I don't know why they did it that way. Lots of other functions and features are greyed out when not available ,but for whatever reason they decided to make this one disappear, Doesn't make sense to me either.

Unfortunately it's a sign of poor UI coding practice. I've been told that separate teams own the firmware for each camera and their UI decisions are sometimes inconsistent. Given what I know of software development practices in Japan I'm very surprised by that. Nikon can do much better on this issue.
