Monopod and VR

I am having a hard time figuring out if I should or should not use VR with my D850/180-400 f/4 Nikon lens. I have researched and get all sort of different opinions. I shoot wild horses and my shutter speed varies between 800-1600. Sometimes lower if horse very still and I want lower ISO. Help? Did some testing but came back sort of the same. Thanks!
