One of the most stunning of quails, the Montezuma Quail is sometimes heard but rarely seen. They are real skulkers and stay hidden in the underbrush almost all the time. While in the Chiricahua Mountains in southeastern Arizona, we did hear a covey. However, as we looked for them, another covey showed up. The male from one covey would climb up on small rocky outcrop to look around, only to chased off the perch by a male from the other covey. Four males participated in this confrontation, and we were able to get shot of them out in the open on the rocks. The entire competition continued for about 20 minutes!
