Has anyone any experience with using a motion detector to alert to wildlife. I am filming Caribou and will be set up near a known crossing but want a notification of when they are in the area. I am thinking of a silent alarm that will signal me when they cross a highway and enter a specific trail. That way I can camp nearby - ie within a half mile or so, and be alerted when they are in the area. I have found a couple of units under $100 but wonder about their effectiveness. Any suggestions appreciated.

I may be wrong but I think you'd need some sort of wireless service to transmit and receive signals. The only other option that I'm aware of is satellite service but then that could get expensive.

Thx aolander; That's what I have been looking at. I would like a bit more range, but these could work. I have two possible watching or camping spots so some flexibility. However, my other issue is predators, ie humans. The Cariobu band I am working on is threatened by a new, expanding gold mine and logging. If I place camera traps (which is not the type of visual I want) or obvious detectors it is conceivable, nay, nay, likely, that they will be "removed." So, I am planning on camping nearby, hopefully in my trailer as access is not too hard. One of the area I will be working is where the herd follows a migration route which crosses and lingers on a secondary highway in spring and fall. Thanks all for the ideas.
