Moved some of my RAW's to my NAS, now the edits on those are gone in LRC

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

As the title says, i moved some of my RAWs to my NAS to free up space on my local disk and now, weirdly, the edits on the pics are no more. The edits are still there on the RAWs that i left on my local drive. I'm using Windows 10.

Any advice as to what could be wrong?

Not sure how LRC works, but NX Studio adds files with the changes made. If you move just the raw files, leaving the changes, then the program won’t have those changes.
can you use LRC to save your edited images to your NAS?

Well, i of course re-imported the new folder location into LRC, but the edits didn't come with it somehow. Didn't tamper with the catalog files or anything.

If you did in fact re-import, that could be a clue to what went wrong. Did you do it via the import module? That would have treated it as a new import and ignore previous unless you had automatically saved .xmp sidecars. The way to do it if you moved the files not using Lightroom would be to click on the image when it said file missing and help Lightroom find the missing.

When you move a folder, the best solution is to use Lightroom to do this, as Lightroom is going to manage everything : change of location, keeping the edits,...
What's more, if you change a location outside of LR, LR provides a function to relocate the folder. Using this, you don't need to re-import the folder as you simply point at its new location using this relocation function.

As posted above you shouldn't re-import photos to LR once they've been edited or tagged with attributes as new Catalog entries will be created for the newly imported files and all the history will remain with the original Catalog entries. IOW, LR isn't smart enough to know these files already exist within its Catalog and just treats them as new files from the camera even if imported from one of your computer's drives.

In the future if you want to move files from one drive to another drive, including moving from an internal computer drive to NAS do so from within LR using the Files structure within LR's Library module. You can drag and drop existing folders in your LR Files to new folders on the NAS and if you do that within LR all the Catalog information will stay up to date and continue to be associated with the files in their new locations.

If you haven't deleted the Files entries within LR yet for the old file locations you might be able to save the situation by using the LR tools to Locate Missing Files and point those Catalog entries to the new locations. Not sure if the LR file location tools will work in this situation as it seems you re-imported them which means there are multiple Catalog entries for the same photo files which confuses things but that works when someone moves files using OS tools as a way to point the LR Catalog to the new file locations.

Bottom line, going forward it's best to avoid using any operating system tools in Windows, Mac OS or Linux to move files around once they've been imported into a LR Catalog. Use the file management tools within LR itself to move files to new locations when you do things like add storage drives and the LR Catalog will stay properly synched to the new file locations.

Try
1 move those raw files back to folder on your pc where you moved them from.
2 check in LR the edits are there
3 use the LR file system - as per #6 - to move the folder to your NAS
4 all should be well! 🤞🙏

The Edits are NOT part of your RAW files. LR is "non destructive". That means that the RAW file is NOT changed. Your edits are in the Lightroom catalog or as part of a "sidecar file" if you saved them separately, the edits will be contained in XMP files. that means that if you move photos to another location, you either need to also move the LR catalog, or move the XMP files. in this way , your edits can be viewed thru LR at a later time. If you export the raw file as a JPEG the LR edits will be applied and you can save the photos somewhere else, and they will "have" your edits. But, you will not have your original unchanged raw file.

Alright, i've got it sorted now. Thank goodness that i backup my catalog on every closeing of LRC, so i had the chance to reopen an older catalog and then point LRC to the missing folders.
Glad you sorted it.
