Weather is quite gloomy here but we took the dogs for a outing yesterday arvo and I brought the camera for a test shoot. There's a spot were Pelicans sit on a log that I've used before for consistency to that was a decent test shot.

Fully image with a light edit on post, no cropping etc. Using a monopod (although I think I may have picked it up for this shot...) D850 1/800 F/4 ISO 450 (under exposed by probably half stop, fixed in post).

Now the test... 100% crop (on my computer) 2000px long side.

For wide open and such a crop I'm definitely happy with the sharpness retained. Look forward to using it in anger!

That looks quite nice!

Second test, same place & subject.

Today was the D5 (that I picked up today :D) with the 1.4 MkII extender fitted with the 600E. 1/2000 F/5.6 ISO450 Exposure was pretty close this time with some minor slider tweaks only. 100% 2000px crop again which I work out to be 35.9% of the sensor, which would also be 2970px on the D850 for interest.

Again, wide open looks pretty good for me.

Adding a 1348px crop which would be equivalent to the sensor coverage of the 2000px D850 crop for giggles

More contrast. Is that in PP? Possible exposure. Retail therapy seems quite effective.
PP was quite similar with the exception of needing to add half stop on the first, lighting conditions were quite different and this is a slightly older bird vs yesterday being a younger one. Probably could have added a touch of contrast on the first (just had a play, slight change but not dramatic).

I am seriously considering a D6 & a 600 mm E. Your results definitely showed me there value. I am using an 810 with an older 200-400. My keeper rate is a struggle. My wife is encouraging me to pull the plug but it’s hard looking at $19 g’s.
I completely understand, I could have bought another motorcycle to add to the shed last week... and that's with a used D5 let alone the D6. This is why we work/worked though right.

Further test, same place, subject etc. D850 with the 1.4 tele 2000px crop 1/640 F/5.6 ISO 450 exposure this image was pretty spot on, very minimal adjustment.

2x tele combo's and D500 testing to go... my D500 is on the shop so that might be a couple of weeks away.

Test shots? Wow! I love the first shot. I am already considering the 600, but now you really have my stomach churning about spending that money. Once you buy it, you know you have to go somewhere to take advantage of using it. I live 25 miles southwest of Chicago and the only animals to shoot (photograph) are two legged road rage animals. 🤣😂🤣

Try $26k in Australia.......
