A visual narrative of a male Southern Masked Weaver, Ploceus velatus, building his nest in a Phragmites reedbed. I took over 2000 frames during the past week - witnessing the construction of two different nests what were very likely built by the same male. Quite a few photos made it through to the final sequence, and some of these capture several of his commuting flights with nesting material. I started recording within about 1 hour of his starting construction.
Completing a nest typically takes him about a full day, provided an early start on the job. One hardworking little bird! Some of the final sequence illustrate how the male forces individual grass strands outwards into the bowl shaped cup. This will soon become a cosy incubation chamber, after it's been lined with a mattress of finer plant material including seedheads and feathers, for insulation and padding. Nikon D850 400mm f2.8E FL Nikkor TC14 III 1/3200, f8, ISO800 - ISO1400
