I have had questions about the acceptability of this approach. I do not feel that the use of flash is harmful to otters as they do not use sight when hunting - they usually hunt in darkness below the surface of often turbid water using their whiskers to locate prey by touch. Secondly the whole setup provides supplemental feeding for the animals who are free to come and go as they choose - some nights they do not turn up at all but on other occasions especially when the weather is poor or when their local river is in flood they seem to rely on this food source.
