After years of trying, and failing in equal measure, I have managed to get some 'keepers' of a nightjar in flight. Not award winners maybe but persistence was the key.

Thanks for that DRwyoming, I used Nikon SB600 speedlight attached to the camera, single flash. Had my camera, D7100, on manual, ISO 800, f8, 1/250 sec and relied on the autofocus, which worked quite well considering how poor the light was.
 
Incredible.....have never managed to get Nightjars in flight. Here's my take on the Indian Nightjar. They are very difficult to spot even during the day time.
