Nikon 24-70 2.8E VR won't focus in Live View

I rented this lens and when trying to use it in LV it never focuses on my rented D850. It works well when using the ViewFinder but to me, it lacks sharpness. I tested it on another camera and it's the same issue. I'm assuming it's an issue with the lens and not the body.

1) it probably needs to have some fine tuning.... that lens is a tack sharp lens when dialed in.
2) The problem is Most likely caused by the AF-ON setting, which can't set to any focus point at live view mode. For wildlife photo, we normally assign AF-ON to AF-ON+ group. Since live view don't have single point, group focus. The group setting will make AF-ON notwork at live view mode

Ok thank you so much. Is there a setting in live view I need to change sorry for the dumb question.

I don’t have a d850 but on my D500 In f1 try setting AF-ON button to just AF-ON (ie: no focus area mode). if a focus mode is set then there is no focus in live view

Here is how my autofocus is setup. I'm using back button focus if that helps

I’ve seen that kind of behaviour with third party lenses often, but never a Nikon lens, very strange. If you have some rubbing achol try cleaning the cpu contacts on the len and see if that helps.

also check the live view AF mode (wide, narrow, spot etc) and the drive mode (S, AF-F etc) maybe you accidentally turned of liveview AF?

Unfortunately that didn't work. it autofocuses in live view with every other lens I have. There must be something wrong with it. I haven't tried cleaning the contacts I will give that a shot.

Personally I wouldn't touch it.... if it's rented... Contact the people you rented it and let them deal with it. Don't give them a reason to imply you did something to it.
