Nikon 300pf with teleconverter

There seems to be agreement that the Nikon 300pf lens works well with a 1.4 teleconverter and not so well with a 2.0 teleconverter. Does anyone have experience with using a 1.7 teleconverter with this lens? if so, how did it work? Thanks.

I ran my 300 PF with both the 1.4x and 1.7x teleconverters. They both work but I found AF to be a touch slower with the 1.7x converter. The IQ was very good and basically unchanged from the straight lens using the 1.4x converter (TC-14 ii or iii) but at least on my copy there was a very small but noticeable IQ loss with the 1.7x converter. I still shot with that combo a lot prior to getting my 500mm PF as it's a great walk around solution but I'd say there was a slight softening with the 1.7x converter that I didn't see with the 1.4x converter.

FWIW, here's an image captured under fairly bright light with that lens combo:

I wouldn't call it soft or out of focus and I captured many images with this lens combo that I've kept and consider useable but to my eyes this combo isn't quite as crisp as the 300mm PF plus TC-14 ii or TC-14 iii.

I concur with DR. That said, I use the 1.7x with my 300 pf all the time. It is a GREAT walk around combo and it's also good when you have to hike on rough
terrain. Attached photo shot with that combo.

I use the 1.4x all the time with my 300 PF, but I have tried it with the 1.7x. It works ok, but the auto focus is slow and doesn't always work on my D750. The IQ is pretty good, but the 1.4x is better.
