So I’m curious if anyone has tried it?

I asked last week about Nikon F to Sony E adapters and there wasn’t much of a response. Doing some research it appears that the early adapters sucked. However with firmware 6 versions they seem to work on some lenses very well.

I have two lenses I’m interested in adapting. The 500PF and my 70-200 f2.8 FL E. According to their comparability chart the 70-200 FL E works great but the 500 PF isn’t listed.

I asked the question on B&H and I received a response that the lens hasn’t been tested yet.

I’m curious has anyone tried it? Seems worth a try as the newer pro grade Nikon lenses seem to do well. Also with the better Sony bodies like an a9 I suspect it would work better with than older Sony models.

I don’t have a Sony body yet but for the price and the ability to return it I think it’s worth a try. If it works the combo could be amazing.

Here is the adapter I’m looking at.

I don’t have the Vello but I have the Commlite V06. The 500 Pf is unusable on it. Only will aF if you first MF to within an inch of your perch. Not even worth a second thought unless A1 has changed things. 500E was almost as useless. 300 PF without any TCs does AF and can be used but still if it gets lost can take a while to drive AF back to where you want it. I will retest on A1 when mine arrives as I still have both PF lenses collecting dust on my shelf. Fingers crossed. My testing was on A9, A9II and A7RIV

Also I’m not certain but I wouldn’t doubt that Vello is just a rebranded Commlite. Commlite was the one and only go to adapter for people when adapting was more popular. There are shorter Nikon lenses that work well.

That's unfortunate. FWIW the Vello is a re-branded Commlite.

I too tried the Commlite with a 500pf on an a7rii and it was unusable. I also tried the 70-300p with the same results.

There's a long history of using adapted lenses on Sony bodies. Have a look at Fred Miranda or Talkemount forums. Canons have proved fairly reliable and their supertelephotos were more commonly adapted than Nikons.
The adapter engineers have to decode the comms between lens and body. Even where they succeed a firmware change can end them.
Now there's a good choice of native tele lenses; the two zooms are very good and the two long primes are excellent including with the two TCs.
