Nikon 800mm f/6.3 VS The new upcoming 200 - 600mm

The image size from the 800mm is 77% greater than with a 600mm focal length so one would often find themselves using the 1.4x TC with a 600mm lens. OK with the 600mm or 400mm lenses but I would not expect great things with it on a 180-600mm zoom lens anymore than I found with a TC-14 on the 200-500mm f lens.

Agreed
180-600 with 1.4TC in the Ricci video looked pretty bad.
Of course his comparisons are at 200% and I'm sure the IQ would be okay with some good PP. Some may find it acceptable.
I found that with the Sony 200-600 and 1.4TC that I was happy on a lower MP body like 24MP A9II but not on high MP A1 or A7RIV.
I think 180-600 will be similar. May be okay on Z6II but not great on Z8/9.

If I owned neither: the focal range and flexibility of the zoom is perfect for birding, and using the DX mode on the Z8/Z9 you have the ultimate 1-lens setup, so the 180-600 would easily be my pick.

If I owned the 800PF (which I do): the 180-600 makes sense as a complimentary lens, but I can also see reaching a point where it's versatility and adequate performance elevate it over the 800PF for all but the most dedicated of use cases. I'd be willing to compromise some of the 800PF's advantages in exchange for lower weight and that all-important versatility, especially since the 180-600 seems to be showing so well in preliminary samples. Personally, I can't see owning an 800PF and not using it, so it'd eventually get sold. For now though, I love the 800PF + 100-400 combo I'm running, so that's where I'll stay.

What I might do: just buy the 180-600 and run it alongside the 100-400/800PF I already own, and see which I reach for the most. If it turns out the new lens gets a lion's share of the use, then the other two will go away.
