I just acquired a 500mm F/4 E FL lens and have a question regarding teleconverters…

I have been using the 500mm F/4 “G” lens for about 4 years and also have the TC-14E II. I don’t use the TC very often, but I wanted to get everyone’s opinion on whether it is worth upgrading to the TC-14E III for using with the new lens. They seem to be about $300 on the used market. Do you feel I would notice much of a difference between the two for this particular lens?

(This is for use with my Z8 + FTZ II)

As Groob says, there is a difference but it’s not huge. If you’re only using the tc infrequently, you’d have to consider if the price is worth it.

From Photography Life:

I had the 1.4x TCII and used it on my 300 f2.8G VRII and 500 f4 G VR and it worked brilliantly on the 300 f2.8G VRII and pretty good on the 500 f54G VR but not as good as with the 300 f2.8. I then sold the 500 f4 G VR and purchased the 400 f2.8E FL VR and not long after that, the 1.4x TCIII came out and I purchased that TC. Like the review states, the 1.4x TCIII on my 400 f2.8E FL VR was fantastic, you'd be hard pressed to see a drop in IQ with the 1.4x TCIII on the lens. From memory, I think the 1.4x TCII worked great on the 400 f2.8E FL VR but the 1.4x TCIII was marginally better and slightly less CA towards the edges not that there was really any anyway. I think the 1.4x TCIII mates better with the newer E lenses, like the 400 f2.8E FL VR, the 500 f4E FL VR and 600 f4E FL VR more so than the older G versions.

Ages ago I saw a review of the mkii and mkiii Nikon TCs and the conclusion was that yes, the mkiii was better, but only by a little (IIRC about 5%) and only on newer (FL?) lenses.

I have both versions and only have seen minor differences in micro contrast and CA when viewing at 200% or higher. As a practical matter, the III version is slightly better with FL lenses, but other than that, I would probably use the II version. The II version has an additional contact and works with a couple of lenses not supported by the III.

I was surprised when I added the TC-20 III that it provided sharper images than the TC-14 II teleconverter that I owned. After seeing the difference I bought the TC-14 III teleconverter. I could easily see the difference with images shot with a 12MP D3 camera.
