I read this week that Nikon is coming out with a 300f2.8 and a mystery lens in 2021. It will likely be the 400 2.8 however Nikon Rumors mentioned that they would have innovate feature never seen before.

This got me thinking. I think for the big primes 300 f2.8, 400 f2.8, 500 f4 and 600 f4 Nikon should put a built in 1.4TC. This would blow everyone away and they have already done it on the 180-400 so we know they can.

What do you all think? I think it would be a big game changer!

I like the idea of built-in 1.4x TCs. Although at the moment, I’m hoping more for PF lenses in Z mount for their smaller size (understanding the compromise in aperture).

What do you all think?
If Nikon can get the internal TCs aligned properly with the lenses that would be nice indeed. Apparently they've struggled a bit to do that with the 180-400mm as folks report better results with an external TC-14 iii than with the internal TC which really shouldn't be the case.

The only downside I see with well matched (aligned) internal TCs is that you're basically paying for and carrying around a dedicated TC for each lens rather than purchasing and carrying one TC that will be used across several lenses. But the field convenience, especially in windy and dusty environments would be great.

Pun intended? :)

It wouldn't, people would be complaining about the high prices. and they would tell the world they wanted a lens without that friggin TC.
I disagree. When someone is paying $10-13K for a lens this is a dedicated sports photographer and the wildlife photographers who will pay the price will welcome the convenience and speed. Canon is doing it as well and they just as Nikon are focused on the professional sports photographer who in many cases doesn't pay for their equipment. It is about delivering results.

I'd love to see a built-in TC on future long primes, but NOT if it's like what I have in my 180-400. I'm actually going to send the lens in next week and see if it's an issue with the TC or if it just, well, kind of sucks. It works alright in light with good contrast and if you're really filling the frame, but when I compared it to my 1.4TCiii, the 1.4iii was noticeably better than the internal one. So, you're kind of left feeling like you paid a LOT for a lens with a TC that is really better off disengaged.

Problem with in built TCs with f2.8 primes is, it will limit the versatility...f2.8 lenses take all the 3 TCs well...it will be great if Nikon comes up with TCs like on the 180-400 lens but a detachable version...one that can be used on any of the lenses but functions similar to the one on 180-400.. flick the switch on to employ the TC and turn off when not needed without having to remove the TC.

Send it in @Steve definitely sounds like a defective one or a bad copy.
I wonder.. you have the lens now quite a while so is the problem revealing itself now or from the beginning?
It's been like that form the beginning but it also seems like the lens I rented was the same way (although I didn't test it head-to-head against the 1.4iii). It is "good enough" sometimes with a little extra sharpening, I just think it should be at least as good as the external TC. I'll report back :)

I happen to know 3 men more owning this lens, they are like myself all very happy with the lens.
Brad Hill too, he doesn’t report either on weak TC performance, nor does Thom Hogan.

If I personally HAD to name a negative it would be the vignetting, but that doesn’t personally bother me at all.

Send it in this is not the way it should perform Steve.
That's what I'm hoping. It just doesn't make sense that Nikon would put out a lens like this that wasn't top-notch all the way.

Personally I don't like the Idea of built in TCs. It can only add to the price of each lens as well as add an additional failure point to each lens when most WL shooters already have a TC an only need one for use with any (compatible) lens.

Source?
A thread here and other forums are discussing the trending Nikon rumour that there's a Z9. This mentions a 400 f2.8...

Unfortunately they, especially Nikon, never seem to do what you think they should. But yes, you’re on to something there. I would settle for a 200-500 f4 with built in 1.4TC that weighs in at 85 ounces, give or take! 😂
